To get to know the history of Sri Lanka, let’s start its name originally called Lanka, word that simply means island. Then Taprobone by Greeks, Serendib by Arabs, Celao by thr Portuguese, Ceylan by the Venetians and finally Ceylon by the British and 68 more names assigned. It became a version of Lanka once again in 1972 joined with “Sri” which means resplendent. The name Sri Lanka means resplendent island. Admired for its riches, its gems, spices including famous cinnamon (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum) native to Sri Lanka and its elephants. Sri Lanka has attracted too many international merchants for millennium.

Sri Lanka is an island of the Indian Ocean, it’s 5.30 hours ahead of GMTand 6 degrees above the equator. The Palk straits about 35km (23 miles) separates India and Sri Lanka. Languages

As a multinational country, 3 major languages are used. They are Sinhala, Tamil and English. According to the constitution Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages, whilst English is the link language. English is spoken everywhere in the country. Most if the sign boards are in all 3 languages. Sinhala is one of the few oldest languages which has own alphabet and characters.
